Dental Implants
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a metal screw that substitutes the lost tooth’s root section. An artificial tooth (crown) is attached to an extension of the dental implant’s post (implants), giving you the appearance of a natural tooth. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials, typically titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth. These replacement teeth, which can be crowns, bridges, or dentures, are securely anchored to the implants, providing stability and functionality similar to natural teeth.
How Does a dental implants work?
Placing the Implant
Our oral surgeon will make a slit in your gum to expose the bone during the procedure to place the dental implant. As the implant post will have to serve as the tooth root, it is deeply inserted into the bone. You'll still see a gap where your tooth is gone at this point. If necessary, to improve your look, our specialist might use a partial or temporary denture to fill the gap.
Recovery stage
At this stage, you will have to wait for a few months to let your jaw bone grow around the implant (known as osseointegration) to provide solid support for your new artificial tooth like your natural roots.
Abutment Placement
When the above process is complete, our oral surgeon will place an abutment; a piece where the crown will eventually attach.
Placement of Permanent Crown
Once your gums heal, our surgeon will take more impressions of your remaining teeth to make a crown which looks natural and compliments your remaining teeth to give a natural-looking artificial tooth.
